The 14th century saw the emergence of a new and deeper yoga, one that drew upon physical practices of old, as well as incorporating elements of practice and philosophy that had been developed in preceding centuries as 'tantra.'
In those same centuries there emerged in Europe a vision of Christianity and of inner spiritual awakening that was represented especially in the sermons of Meister Eckhart. His vision was a response to the dualism of St. Augustine, just as the tantric vision in India was a response to the dualism of Samkhya and Patanjali.
At the heart of Eckhart's Christian mysticism was the inner 'Breakthrough' to the Divine that spills out into our outer life. It is a 'melting' into the Divine within the heart that he expressed in language that resonates with the tantric language of Laya Yoga — the dimension of yoga that is the basis for Yoga Nidra.
From our perspective centuries later, we can see how each development illuminates the other. Through discussion of these parallel visions, we can come to appreciate our yoga and our own spiritual path all the more deeply, and understand the kinship between these two voices of the spiritual heart.
